Brewery: St Austell Brewery, Cornwall, UK
Bottle Size: 500ml
Taste:Chocolate, coffee with a citrus Undertone.
Colour:As the name suggests black with a medium beige foam head.
Aroma:Roasted hops, with a chocolate blend.
I have been torn on St Austell brewery beers in the past, but proper black was one I enjoyed.
The name says it all, when poured out this beer looks proper black, but held up to the light it is a very dark burgundy, the roasted hop smell is a delight to the nostrils.
This is one of the smoothest beers I have had from St Austell, and due to the slight hints of citrus and chocolate with a decent coffee flavour backing them up, this is one of the better ones.
Proper black seemed a little confusing to me, is it an Ale? Is it a Stout? Honestly is doesn’t matter. It’s an enjoyable drink and that what counts.
I feel this could be a nice beer for a night at the pub with your mates, although due to the 6% ABV your head might not agree in the morning.
